Urogynecology

What is UroGYN?

UroGYN is a shortened version of the word urogynecology, which is a hybrid specialty combining urology and gynecology because all the organs in the pelvic floor are so close together that any issues can overlap from one organ to another. The focus of UroGYN can identify and treat issues that affect both the bladder/urethra and the vaginal canal/uterus. Urogynecology addresses issues with the reproductive and urinary tracts including: endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, and pelvic organ prolapse.

What is menopause?

Menopause is the natural decline of menstruation and reproductive hormone production in a woman. Menopause generally begins during a woman’s 40’s or 50’s. Some common symptoms of menopause include: mood swings, weight gain, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, night sweats, and irregular periods. Generally, after your gynecologist has diagnosed you as going through the stages of menopause, and you haven’t had a menstrual cycle in one year, a woman would be considered post-menopausal.* Many post-menopausal women experience looseness and dryness within the vaginal area because of the lack of the elastin and collagen production within the body after menopause. Dr. Jeffery can correct this issue using MonaLisa Touch, an innovative, non-surgical laser treatment. *

What is pelvic organ prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) occurs when the connective tissue and muscles that hold the organs within the pelvic floor loosen or fail. These organs, located in the abdominal region, are the uterus, rectum, and bladder. If one of these organs changes position, it can press into the vaginal wall and cause a myriad of problems. However, there are many treatments options for POP, including surgery.
